The archive draws material from three main sources:
Thanks to the kind support of a number of individuals who have diligently maintained and shared their collections of newspaper cuttings, photographs, programmes, recordings and other materials, most of the archive content comes from personal collections. The archive does not report the provenance of each item, but if you have a valid reason to obtain this information, please contact the archive at eusogarchive@gmail.com
The British Newspaper Archive is a partnership between the British Library and Findmypast to digitise the British Library's vast collection of newspapers. The British Library's newspaper collections are among the finest in the world, containing most of the runs of newspapers published in the UK since 1800.
The Archive contains scans of both original paper copies of newspapers and microfilm.
The British Newspaper Archive contains a complete collection of the Scotsman from 1817 to 2002. Newspapers published within the last 20 to 25 years still carry significant commercial value for the current publisher, National World Publishing Ltd. Rather than licensing post-2002 pages to a historical archive database like the BNA, publishers prefer to monetise modern archives directly through their own subscription models, website paywalls, and app platforms.
While the British Newspaper Archive contains a continuous collection of publications of the Edinburgh Evening News from its foundation in 1873 through to 1962, there is an unfortunate gap in coverage between 1962 and 1981 due to copyright restrictions and publisher licensing. Coverage between 1982 and 1995 is intermittent which stems from incomplete digitisation agreements with the archives.
Libraries designed to collect and preserve every publication within a country are called national libraries. They operate under laws that require publishers to deposit a copy of every published work, a system universally known as legal deposit. No single library contains a complete record of EUSOG materials, but some items can be found across a range of sites. The EUSOG archive currently contain items sourced from the National Libraries of Scotland, the University of Edinburgh Heritage Collections and aims to seek material from the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection at the Edinburgh Central Library.
